In connection with the exhibition Visionary Romantics. Balke, Lucas, Hertervig, organised by the Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica, the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, the Stavanger Art Museum and the Nordic Institute of Art, several speakers from universities, museums, and institutions in Spain, Norway, UK, and Sweeden discuss in this study day the landscapes by these three artists, mainly executed for their own intellectual pleasure. The speakers analise these views as landscapes of the mind, emphasising the innovative character of the technique employed by each of them in what could be read as a step towards abstracting nature. Thus, Balke, Lucas and Hertervig – members of an international trend based on the aesthetic ideal of the sublime – are inserted in their rightful historiographical context, aligning their common sensibility and will to innovate with that of other prominent romantic landscapists such as Caspar David Friedrich, J. M. W. Turner, and Victor Hugo.
