The exhibition Copied by the Sun. The Talbotypes from the «Annals of the Artists of Spain» by Sir William Stirling Maxwell ends at the Prado
This exhibition is the culmination of several years’ work in Glasgow and Madrid, during which time José Manuel Matilla and Hilary Macartney studied and analysed the available volumes of the talbotypes used by Stirling Maxwell to illustrate his Annals of the Artists of Spain (1848), selecting the best preserved prints. The Museo del Prado and the CEEH set out to achieve recognition for the Scottish collector’s work, whose importance lies in the fact that it is not only the first art book to be illustrated with photographs, but also helped gain foreign acceptance for Spanish artists. The catalogue, which remains available to specialists and readers, consists of a facsimile and a volume of studies.
