Romantic Spain. David Roberts and Genaro Pérez Villaamil closes
The exhibition, curated by Claudia Hopkins, offered visitors an insight into the dialogue between the two painters’ works in the context of nineteenth-century travelling artists’ cultural discovery of Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, presenting their respective approaches to Spanish reality (daily life, religion, landscape, history and architecture) through their oeuvre. From its opening at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando last October to its closure yesterday, the show received many visitors and glowing reviews from the specialised press. The accompanying catalogue, published in Spanish and English, now stands as a reference work on the artistic relationship between Roberts and Villaamil and the emergence of the Romantic image of Spain.
