Romantic Spain: David Roberts and Genaro Pérez Villaamil opens at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes
Yesterday the CEEH, the Instituto Ceán Bermúdez and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando opened an exhibition at the latter on the role played by two great landscape painters in creating the Romantic image of Spain: Scotsman David Roberts and Galician Genaro Pérez Villaamil. The show, an initiative promoted by the CEEH and designed as an artistic dialogue between the two painters, features more than 120 works from major public and private collections, both British and Spanish, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain, the Museo del Prado and Patrimonio Nacional. The curator, Claudia Hopkins, is also responsible for the catalogue, an extensively illustrated volume that is now available in Spanish and English.
The exhibition will be on view at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes until 16 January 2022. A one-day conference is scheduled to take place a few days before it ends, with the participation of several of the catalogue’s authors and other guest scholars of various nationalities.
