Romantic Spain. David Roberts and Genaro Pérez Villaamil is honored with the 2022 Jonathan Brown Award
The Jonathan Brown Award of the Society for Iberian Global Art was established in 2022 in order to recognize exceptional achievement in an exhibition catalogue dedicated to an Iberian or global Iberian theme. The award is named for the renowned scholar, professor, and curator Jonathan Brown (1939–2022). This inaugural year the members of the committee (Dr. Alexandra O. Letvin, Princeton University Art Museum; Dr. Rebecca J. Long, The Art Institute of Chicago; Dr. Michael A. Brown, The San Diego Museum of Art) unanimously chose to honor Romantic Spain. David Roberts and Genaro Pérez Villaamil, edited by Claudia Hopkins.
According to the committee, “this richly illustrated catalog offers a comprehensive study between these two artists. The publication combines an impressive array of around 120 objects and critical scholarship by twelve contributors. At once a thorough and nuanced examination of artistic and archival material, it simultaneously offers an important critical revision of Iberian Orientalism”.
Romantic Spain. David Roberts and Genaro Pérez Villaamil, jointly published by the CEEH, the Instituto Ceán Bermúdez and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, was coordinated and produced by the CEEH. A Spanish version of the catalogue is also available.
