Julián Marías (1914–2005), a philosopher, essayist, and key figure on the Spanish intellectual scene of the twentieth century, was a follower and collaborator of José Ortega y Gasset, with whom he founded the Instituto de Humanidades in 1948. Although he was unable to teach in Spain for a long time, he lectured at various universities in the United States. He regularly contributed to the Spanish press and his vast philosophical oeuvre earned him the Prince of Asturias award for Communication and Humanities in 1990, together with Indro Montanelli.
